Last few weeks things have changed significantly for our parish with the new appointment of Fr John as the next Bishop of Palmerston North Diocese and I as the Administrator of the parish. In addition, two Vietnamese have been recently ordained for the Diocese of Dunedin. These have happened at different places; however they have a common call: leaving everything behind to follow God’s call. It is asked one to detach his own plans and wishes to do God’s will. The culture is changed from “what I want to do” to “what I need to do.”

This is also the common theme of this weekend’s readings. Christ’s followers are invited to be on the witnessing mission to love God and others through their commitment in humble service, generosity in giving times and energy, and the practice of corporal and spiritual works of mercy. Surely, there is sacrifice demanded of Christ’s disciples and sufferings they may experience; nevertheless we are also strengthened with Jesus’ words: “If anyone gives so much as a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple, then I tell you solemnly, he will most certainly not lose his reward (Mt 10:42).”
