Whoever Eats This Bread Will Live Forever

Our gospel this week continues with the ‘Bread of Life’ theme of the past few weeks. Jesus once again  encourages his listeners to move in their thinking from the empirical to the supernatural. This invitation is also for us. How else are we to understand the claim of Jesus that “…any one who eats this bread will live for ever.”

The desire to eat first presupposes an appetite – a hunger. I believe that this    hunger exists today as it did 2000 years ago. The ways in which we attempt to  satisfy this hunger may change through out the ages, but surely the quenching of this thirst, the ‘answer’ to this hunger, has remained the same. It’s Jesus; only    Jesus will assuage our yearning. Jesus attempts to make this very claim when he tells the people this weekend: “I am the living bread come down from heaven,   whoever eats this bread will live forever.”
